Local SEO
Written for owners, not marketers. No jargon, no gatekeeping, and no pretending this is harder than it is.
If you have just started looking into this, most of what you will find is written for people who already know the vocabulary. This is not.
The one-sentence version
Local SEO is the work of making your business appear when someone nearby searches for what you sell.
That is genuinely all it is. Everything else is detail about how.
Where local search actually happens
Search for a plumber on your phone and look at what comes back, in order:
- Ads at the top, marked as ads. Businesses pay for those.
- The map pack — a map with three businesses under it, each with a star rating, distance, hours, and a call button.
- Blue links below that, the ordinary web results.
For most local service businesses, the map pack is where the phone calls come from. On a phone it takes up most of the first screen, it has a call button on it, and someone who needs a plumber today usually never scrolls past it.
Local SEO is mostly about that middle block. That is the single most useful thing to understand, and it is what separates local SEO from the general kind.
How Google decides who appears
Google weighs three things. This framework has been public and stable for years.
Relevance — does what you do match what was searched? Decided largely by the category you choose, the services you list, and what your profile and website say.
Distance — how far is your business from the person searching? Measured from their location to yours.
Prominence — how well known and well regarded do you appear? Built from reviews, mentions across the web, and general standing.
You have direct control over relevance, slow influence over prominence, and no control at all over distance.
Why distance matters more than people expect
Because distance is measured from the searcher, the results are recalculated for every place a search happens from.
This has a consequence that surprises most owners: there is no such thing as "your ranking." There is your ranking from a particular spot. Someone searching from one side of a city and someone searching from the other can see completely different top threes for the same words, at the same moment, with nothing having changed.
It also means a screenshot showing you at number one proves very little on its own, because it was taken somewhere — and that somewhere is very often the business's own address, which is the easiest place for it to rank.
What the work actually is
Local SEO work divides into five unglamorous parts.
Your Google Business Profile. The free listing that feeds the map pack. Choosing the right primary category, declaring an honest service area, keeping hours accurate, listing your actual services, adding real photos. This is the highest-return work for most local businesses and it costs nothing but attention.
Consistency. Your business name, address and phone number appearing identically everywhere online. Inconsistency confuses the systems that read it.
Reviews. A steady flow of genuine ones. Steady matters more than total — twenty reviews in a week looks exactly like twenty bought reviews, because that is usually what it is.
Content. Pages that explain what you actually do and where. Not necessarily blog posts; for a local service business a genuinely useful service page usually earns more than four articles.
Technical work. Making sure the site loads quickly, works on a phone, and can be read by search engines.
What it costs, and how to decide
Genuine local SEO in this market generally runs $1500 to $3000 a month, driven mostly by how contested your category is. Below about $1,000 there is not enough time in the month to do the work properly, which usually means it is not being done.
Whether that is worth paying is arithmetic you can do in ten minutes:
What one lead is worth = your average job value × your close rate on enquiries
Leads needed to break even = monthly fee ÷ lead value
If a job averages $450 and you close 40% of enquiries, a lead is worth $180, and a $1,500 fee needs about nine extra leads a month to break even. Look at that against your current volume and you have your answer — from your own numbers rather than someone's projection.
How long it takes
Three different clocks:
- Google Business Profile improvements: 30 to 60 days
- Map pack position: 60 to 90 days
- Ordinary website rankings for competitive terms: 6 to 12 months
Month one is diagnosis and correction, and it looks like nothing from the outside. That is normal. What month one should produce is a documented starting position and a dated list of what was done — that is evidence of work, which is a different thing from evidence of results, and you are entitled to the first one immediately.
Can you do it yourself?
A surprising amount, yes — and the free parts are frequently the valuable parts.
Correcting your primary category, bringing your service area back to reality, fixing hours, filling in services, and asking customers for reviews cost nothing and are often worth more than a year of content.
What is harder to sustain yourself is the measurement, the technical work, and simply continuing to do it every month once the business gets busy. That is genuinely most of what an agency is for, and it is a more honest description than "expertise."
