SEO Agency

Hiring one, checking one, and leaving one. The parts of this that go wrong are almost never technical.

You are being asked to evaluate work you cannot inspect, on a channel that takes months to show results, usually under a contract written by the other side. That combination is where the money gets lost — not in the SEO itself.

The structural problem, stated plainly

Three things are true at once in almost every SEO engagement, and together they cause most of the damage:

You cannot verify the work. Unlike a roof or a set of accounts, most of what an agency does is invisible unless someone shows it to you deliberately. That is why the dated work log matters more than any other document in the relationship — it is the only part you can check by going and looking.

The results are slow enough to hide behind. Six to twelve months is a genuine timeline, and it is also a perfect excuse. The way to tell patience from stalling is whether the reporting shows work happening while you wait, not whether it shows results.

Leaving is usually made expensive on purpose. Accounts registered in the agency's name, twelve-month terms, automatic renewal, ninety-day notice. None of that improves your rankings. All of it raises the cost of walking away.

Get the third one right and the first two stop being dangerous. An agency you can leave in thirty days has to keep earning the relationship every month, which is the only reliable pressure toward honest reporting that exists in this industry. That is the argument for a month-to-month arrangement, and it is why we run one.

Where to start, depending on where you are

If you are choosing, start with the evaluation questions — they take one email and separate the field faster than any amount of research. If you are mid-engagement and unsure, the reporting page tells you what the monthly document should contain. If you are on the way out, secure the nine accounts before you give notice, not after.

4 guides

The four that matter

why an SEO engagement fails

The six ways SEO engagements actually fail, how to tell which one happened to you, and what each leaves behind that has to be cleaned up before anything new can work.

evaluating an SEO agency before you sign

Make three incomparable quotes comparable, the five questions with specific right answers, the behaviour that separates good from bad, and the red flags sorted by how much they actually cost you.

what an SEO agency does each month

An honest breakdown of where the hours go in a local SEO engagement, why month one looks like nothing, and what it means when the work log repeats itself.

switching SEO agencies without losing rankings or accounts

Rankings sit with your domain and profile, not with the agency. What you can genuinely lose is access — nine assets, what each costs you, and the order that keeps them.
