How to rank on Google Maps in Henderson, NV

The map pack is where local phone calls come from, and most of what decides it is a handful of profile fields that nobody has looked at in three years.

Published 2026-08-07

For most Henderson service businesses, the map pack is the whole game. It is the block of three results with the map above them, it sits above the ordinary blue links, and on a phone it occupies most of the first screen. When someone needs a plumber, a dentist or an attorney, that block is usually where the decision happens.

The good news is that what decides it is not mysterious. Google has published the framework, it has been stable for years, and most of the work is unglamorous profile maintenance rather than anything clever.

The three factors, and which ones you can actually move

Google weighs three things for local results.

Relevance — how well your business matches what was searched. This is the one you have the most direct control over, and it is decided largely by your primary category, your secondary categories, your services list, and the words on your profile and site.

Distance — how far your business is from the person searching. You cannot change this. It is computed from your actual location, and no setting, radius, or amount of money alters it.

Prominence — how well known and well regarded you appear. Reviews, mentions across the web, links, and general standing. This is influenceable but slow, because it accumulates rather than switches on.

Almost every wasted dollar in local SEO comes from someone trying to buy their way around distance, or from an agency charging for prominence work while leaving relevance broken. Relevance is cheap and fast. Fix it first.

Distance is measured from the searcher, not from you

This deserves its own section because it silently invalidates most ranking reports.

The map pack is recalculated for every location a search happens from. Someone standing in Green Valley and someone standing in Anthem see different top threes for the same query, at the same moment, without any ranking change having occurred.

Henderson is large enough for this to matter enormously. It means:

  • There is no such thing as "your ranking in Henderson." There is your ranking from a point.
  • A screenshot proves almost nothing, and the point it was taken from is usually your own address — the single easiest place on earth for you to rank.
  • Two businesses can both honestly claim to be number one for the same search.

The practical response is to measure position from a grid of points across the city instead of one. The report then stops being a number and becomes a sentence you can act on: you are winning Green Valley and losing Anthem. If nothing else in this article sticks, ask any agency you are considering whether they track from one location or a grid. It is a question with a specific answer and it separates them quickly.

The profile fields that are most often wrong

In practice, most Henderson businesses that are underperforming in the map pack are not being out-competed. They have a profile that has not been examined since it was created.

Primary category

The strongest single relevance signal, and the one most often set to something broad and safe-sounding rather than specific and accurate. A business that picks "Contractor" instead of "Roofing Contractor" has quietly removed itself from the searches it most wants.

You get one primary category. Choose the one that matches the highest-value thing you do, then use secondary categories for the rest.

Service area

Declaring a radius that covers the entire valley feels like ambition. It does nothing for reach, because distance is computed from your real location, and it can dilute relevance by making the profile look unfocused.

Declare where you genuinely work. This is also the field most commonly padded by a previous agency, so it is worth opening and looking at.

Hours

Hours decide the "open now" filter, and in emergency categories that filter decides who gets the call. If you genuinely answer at 2am, saying so is worth real money. If you do not, claiming it produces a missed call and frequently a one-star review that outlasts the lead by years.

Set them to what you actually do. Then decide separately whether extending them is a business you want to be in.

Services and description

Underused, and free. Listing your actual services with real descriptions gives Google more surface to match against. The description will not carry a ranking by itself, but it is one more place your actual specialism can be stated plainly.

Photos

Recent, real photographs of real work. This is a lower-weight signal than the fields above, but it is also the one that most affects whether the person who found you actually calls, which is the part that pays.

How to actually choose a primary category

Since this is the highest-value decision on the whole profile, it is worth walking through properly rather than leaving as "pick the specific one."

Start from the money, not from the description. List what you do, put your average job value against each, and multiply by how often you do it. The category should match whatever sits at the top of that list — not whatever describes the business most completely.

A plumbing company that does mostly water heaters and drains, plus the occasional bathroom remodel, is a Plumber. It is not a Bathroom Remodeler, even though the remodels are the most interesting work and the biggest individual invoices.

Then check what the businesses beating you are using. Open the top three for your main search and look at what each declares. If all three are more specific than you, that is your answer and it took four minutes to find.

Then check the category actually exists. Google maintains a fixed list; you cannot invent one. Start typing in the category field and see what comes back. If the exact thing you do is not there, choose the nearest genuine match and put the specificity into your services and page content instead.

Secondary categories are for everything else you genuinely do, and they are close to free. The common mistake in the other direction is adding a dozen loosely-related ones — that dilutes rather than broadens, and it can pull you into searches you will never win while weakening the ones you could.

One thing worth knowing: changing your primary category can cause a short-term wobble in position while Google re-evaluates. That is normal and not a reason to change it back. If the new category is more accurate, hold it.

The fields nobody fills in

Three parts of the profile are free, take under an hour in total, and are left empty on most Henderson listings.

Products. Available in more categories than people expect, and separate from services. For a business that sells identifiable things — equipment, packages, treatments, plans — this is more surface for Google to match against, and it displays prominently on mobile.

Q&A. Anyone can ask a question on your listing, and anyone can answer it, including your competitors and people who have never used you. Left unattended, it is a small liability. Attended, it is free content. You can post your own genuine frequently-asked questions and answer them, which is legitimate and explicitly permitted — what is not permitted is fake questions designed purely to stuff keywords.

Check yours now. Unanswered questions sitting on a listing for two years are common, and they read exactly as they look.

Posts. Short updates that appear on your listing. The honest assessment: their direct ranking effect is modest and they expire. But they signal an attended listing, they occupy space on your profile that would otherwise be empty, and for seasonal or emergency businesses they are a legitimate way to say "we are open and taking calls this week."

Do not let an agency bill you heavily for posting. Do let someone spend fifteen minutes a fortnight on it.

Reviews: cadence beats count

There is no review threshold to cross. Prominence is comparative — what matters is your standing relative to the businesses competing for the same searches.

A few things that are true and frequently ignored:

  • A steady cadence beats a burst. Twenty reviews in a week looks exactly like twenty bought reviews, because that is generally what it is.
  • Review text carries relevance. A review mentioning the actual service and the actual neighborhood does more work than a bare five stars.
  • Responding matters more than it should. It is visible to every future reader, and it is the cheapest reputation work available.
  • Never buy them, never gate them. Filtering out unhappy customers before asking is a review-gating policy violation, and buying reviews risks the profile itself. The downside is losing the asset entirely.

What this looks like as actual work

If you were to fix a neglected Henderson profile in order, it would run roughly like this:

  1. Establish where you currently rank across a grid of the city, so there is a baseline that is not a flattering screenshot.
  2. Correct the primary category. Add accurate secondaries.
  3. Bring the service area back to reality.
  4. Make hours accurate, including whatever you genuinely do after hours.
  5. Fill out services and descriptions properly.
  6. Find and resolve duplicate listings, which quietly split your signal.
  7. Start a review cadence you can actually sustain.
  8. Re-measure on the same grid and compare like for like.

Steps two through five cost nothing but attention and are frequently worth more than a year of content. That is not a sales pitch — it is the reason we start there, and it is also why an agency that skips straight to blog posts should be asked why.

Four things that do not work

Worth stating plainly, because each of these gets sold.

Expanding your service area to reach further. Covered above, and it is the most expensive misunderstanding in local search. The service area says where you will travel. Distance is computed from where you actually are.

Renting a mailbox or virtual office closer to your customers. This is a suspension risk, Google actively removes them, and losing the listing costs more than any ranking gain. It also does not work even when it survives, because verification and the underlying distance calculation both key off a real operating location.

Putting keywords in your business name. "Smith Plumbing Henderson Emergency 24/7" is a violation, it is one of the most commonly reported issues by competitors, and it is a frequent cause of suspension. It sometimes works briefly, which is exactly why people keep trying it.

Buying reviews, or gating them. Both risk the listing itself rather than merely the reviews — and the listing carries every review you ever legitimately earned. Reviews cannot be transferred to a new profile.

The pattern across all four: they trade a durable asset for a short-term position. In a market where your competitors are mostly not doing the free legitimate work, that is a bad trade even before the risk.

What to expect, and when

Setting expectations honestly, because this is where most of the frustration comes from:

  • Profile corrections: typically visible in 30 to 60 days
  • Genuine map pack movement: usually 60 to 90 days
  • Position holding rather than fluctuating: several months beyond that

Fixing a badly broken profile is often the fastest revenue available anywhere in local marketing, because you are removing an obstacle rather than trying to out-accumulate an established competitor. Building prominence against someone with a decade of reviews is the slow part, and no amount of money compresses it much.

If nothing has moved after ninety days and the profile work genuinely was done, the likely answer is that you are being out-competed on prominence or held back by distance — which is a different problem with a different answer, and it is worth diagnosing rather than doing the same work harder.

There is more detail on the profile side in Google Business Profile optimization, and the reporting question — how you verify any of this actually happened — is covered in The One Number Method.

Questions

Questions about ranking on Google Maps in Henderson

What are the three factors Google uses to rank the map pack?

Relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance is how well what you offer matches the search, which you control through your primary category, services and profile content. Distance is measured from the searcher to your business location, which you cannot change without moving. Prominence is how well known and well regarded you appear, built from reviews, mentions across the web, and your general standing. Two of the three are influenceable and one is fixed, and knowing which is which prevents most wasted money in local SEO.

Does expanding my service area help me rank further away?

No, and this is the single most expensive misunderstanding in local search. The service area you declare tells Google where you are willing to travel; it does not change the distance calculation, which uses your actual business location. Over-claiming a radius does not extend reach and can dilute relevance by making your profile look less specific. It is also the field a previous agency is most likely to have padded, so it is worth checking what yours currently says.

Why do I rank in one part of Henderson but not another?

Because distance is measured from wherever the searcher is standing, and the map pack is recomputed for every one of those locations. Henderson is large enough that Green Valley, Anthem, Inspirada and the Water Street District behave like separate markets. You can be in the top three from one and absent from another at the same moment, with no ranking change having occurred. This is also why a single ranking screenshot means very little — it is a result from one point, usually the most flattering one available.

What is the most common profile mistake in Henderson?

A wrong or vague primary category. It is the strongest single relevance signal in the map pack, and choosing the broad safe-sounding option instead of the specific accurate one quietly removes you from the searches you most want. Second most common is an over-claimed service area, and third is hours that do not reflect reality — which matters enormously in emergency categories, because "open now" filtering decides who gets the call.

How many Google reviews do I need to rank?

There is no threshold to cross. Reviews feed prominence, and prominence is comparative — what matters is your position relative to the businesses competing for the same searches, not an absolute count. A steady, genuine cadence beats a burst, partly because a sudden pile of reviews looks exactly like bought ones. Review text also carries relevance signal, so reviews that mention the actual service and the actual area do more work than a bare five stars.

Can I rank in the map pack without a physical address?

Yes. A service-area business can hide its address and still appear, and for home-based businesses that is the correct setup. What you cannot do is invent a location, rent a mailbox to fake proximity, or list an address you do not operate from — those are suspension risks and Google actively removes them. The distance calculation still runs from your real location either way, so hiding the address changes what customers see rather than how you rank.

How long does it take to move in the map pack?

Profile corrections typically begin showing in 30 to 60 days and genuine map pack movement usually takes 60 to 90. Fixing a badly broken profile — wrong category, padded service area, missing hours — is often the fastest revenue in the whole engagement, because you are removing an obstacle rather than trying to out-accumulate a competitor. Building prominence against an established rival is the slow part.
