Diagnostics

Why isn't my business showing up on Google in Henderson?

Before you pay anyone to diagnose this, run these eight checks. Most of the time the answer is in the first three, and all of them are free.

Published 2026-08-07

This is usually the first search someone makes before hiring an SEO agency, and it deserves a real answer rather than a sales page.

Run these eight checks in order. They are free, most take under a minute, and in the majority of cases the answer is in the first three. If you get to the end and everything is clean, then you have a competitive problem rather than a broken one — which is a different and more expensive conversation, but at least you will know.

Before you start: you cannot test this by searching for yourself

Two things make your own searches unreliable, and both matter.

Google personalises results. You have searched for your business, clicked your own listing, and visited your own website many times. Google notices. Your business appears more prominently for you than for anyone else on earth.

Distance is measured from the searcher. You are usually searching from your own premises or your own home, which is the easiest place for you to rank.

So before anything else: open a private or incognito window, and if you can, test from a different part of the city or on a phone with a different connection. What you see then is closer to what a customer sees. It is still not perfect, but it is far better than the flattering version.

The eight checks

1. Is your Google Business Profile verified and live?

Sign in and look at the status. An unverified profile does not appear in the map pack at all, and verification postcards get lost, ignored, or sent to an address nobody checks more often than you would think.

This is thirty seconds and it explains a meaningful share of cases.

2. Is it suspended?

A suspended profile is removed from public results entirely. The common causes are an address that cannot be verified, a virtual office or mailbox used as a location, keywords stuffed into the business name field, or a category that does not match what the business actually does.

Fix the underlying violation before appealing. A reinstatement request submitted while the problem is still there is normally rejected, and each subsequent appeal is harder than the last.

3. Is the primary category right?

Open it and look. The primary category is the strongest single relevance signal in the map pack, and it is very often set to something broad and safe rather than specific and accurate.

A business listed as "Contractor" instead of "Roofing Contractor" has quietly removed itself from the searches it most wants. You get one primary category — spend it on the highest-value thing you do, and put the rest in secondaries.

4. Are there duplicate listings?

Search your business name and your address on Google Maps. Look for older versions, slight name variations, listings at a previous address, or entries someone created years ago and forgot.

Duplicates split reviews and signals between entries, so neither accumulates enough prominence to compete. Have them merged rather than deleted, so the reviews on the duplicate are preserved.

5. Is your website actually indexed?

Search site:yourdomain.com in Google. If nothing comes back, the site is not in the index at all.

The usual causes are a noindex tag left in place after a rebuild — genuinely common, and genuinely invisible unless you look — a robots.txt blocking crawlers, or a site so new it has not been crawled. Search Console's URL inspection tool will tell you the specific reason for any given page rather than leaving you to guess.

6. Is your service area honest?

Look at what is declared. If a previous agency padded it to cover the whole state, that does not extend your reach and it can dilute relevance by making the profile look unfocused.

The service area tells Google where you are willing to travel. It does not change the distance calculation, which uses your actual business location. This is the most expensive misunderstanding in local search and the field most often quietly inflated on your behalf.

7. Are your hours accurate?

Hours drive the "open now" filter. In emergency categories — plumbing, HVAC, locksmith, urgent care — that filter decides who gets the call, so being closed at the moment demand peaks makes you invisible precisely when it matters.

If you genuinely answer after hours, say so. If you do not, do not claim it: a missed emergency call usually costs you a one-star review that outlasts the lead by years.

8. Where exactly are you not showing up?

This is the check that reframes the whole question.

Because distance is measured from the searcher, the map pack is recalculated for every location a search happens from. Henderson is large enough that Green Valley, Anthem, Inspirada, Seven Hills and the Water Street District behave like separate markets. You can be in the top three from one and absent from another, at the same second, with no ranking change having occurred at all.

So "I'm not showing up" often turns out to mean "I'm not showing up in the part of the city I was standing in."

The only way to know which is to measure position from a grid of points across the city rather than from one. That is also why a single ranking screenshot from an agency proves very little, and why "do you track from one location or a grid?" is the most useful question you can ask one.

If all eight are clean

Then nothing is broken, and you are simply being out-competed. That is a real answer and it changes what to do next.

Being out-competed in local search comes down to the two factors you can influence — relevance and prominence — against businesses who have usually been accumulating both for longer. Relevance is cheap and fast: categories, services, genuinely useful pages about what you actually do. Prominence is slow: reviews, mentions, standing.

What it is not is a mystery, and it is not something a proprietary technique fixes. The mechanics are public and have been stable for years.

Local SEO in Henderson covers how the three factors interact here, and how to rank on Google Maps goes through the profile fields in the order worth fixing them.

And if you would rather have someone else run the eight checks and the grid measurement, that is exactly what the free audit is — you keep it whether or not you hire us.

Questions

Questions about not appearing on Google

Why can I not find my own business on Google?

Start with the most common causes in order: the profile is unverified or suspended, the primary category is wrong or too vague, there are duplicate listings splitting your signal, or you are searching from a location where you genuinely do not rank. Searching for your own business by name is also misleading, because Google personalises results for you specifically. Check the profile status first — it takes thirty seconds and it explains a surprising share of cases.

Why do I appear when I search my business name but not my service?

Because those are completely different searches. Your business name is a branded search with essentially no competition, so appearing there proves your listing exists and nothing more. "Plumber near me" is a competitive local search decided by relevance, distance and prominence against every other plumber Google could show. Ranking for your own name is the floor, not evidence of visibility.

Why does my business show up for me but not for my customers?

Two reasons, usually both. Google personalises results based on your history, and you have searched for and clicked your own business many times, which makes it appear more prominently for you than for anyone else. And distance is measured from the searcher, so results are recalculated for every location — you are frequently searching from your own premises, the single easiest place on earth for you to rank. Test in a private window from a different part of the city.

What does it mean if my Google Business Profile is suspended?

It means Google has removed the listing from public results, usually for a policy issue: an address that cannot be verified, a virtual office or mailbox used as a location, keywords stuffed into the business name, or a category that does not match what you do. Fix the underlying problem before appealing, because a reinstatement request submitted while the violation is still in place is normally rejected and repeated appeals get harder.

Can duplicate Google listings stop me ranking?

They can, and it is common in businesses that have moved, rebranded, or had multiple people create listings over the years. Duplicates split reviews and signals between entries, so neither accumulates enough prominence to compete, and Google may show whichever it considers primary — often the wrong one. Search your business name and address on Google Maps, look for older or slightly different versions, and have duplicates merged rather than deleted so the reviews are preserved.

How do I check whether my website is even indexed?

Search for site:yourdomain.com in Google. If nothing comes back, the site is not indexed at all, and the usual causes are a noindex tag left in place after a rebuild, a robots.txt blocking crawlers, or a site so new it has not been crawled yet. Google Search Console's URL inspection tool gives the specific reason for any individual page, which is faster than guessing.

Is it normal to rank in one part of Henderson and not another?

Entirely normal, and it is the single most misunderstood thing about local search. Distance from the searcher is one of the three factors Google weighs, and the map pack is recalculated for every location a search happens from. Henderson is large enough that Green Valley, Anthem and the Water Street District behave like separate markets — you can be top three from one and absent from another at the same moment with no ranking change having occurred.
